That red stuff is called porphyrin (I don't think that's the exact spelling), but it has a pink tint to it and yeah looks like blood, but it isn't. It shows up when either the rat is ill (Like with resp infection, most rats have) or stressed.

Hey I just got a baby rat recently and this morning I was looking at her nose and it looked like it was crusted iwith blood and there was something red comming out of her eye. I wasn't sure what was going on and i figured you'd know.
